Summary
The provider removes a small bone at the back of the skull and spine to relieve pressure at the base of the brain. The procedure is performed to treat cerebellar strokes, bleeds, and tumors. Providers also perform it to treat tonsillar herniation and Chiari malformation, where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal due to an abnormally small or misshapen skull, which presses on the brain and forces it downward.
