In this procedure, the provider removes a small portion of the occipital bone at the back of the skull including the back of the upper one or two cervical vertebrae to relieve pressure on the medulla, or brain stem, and spinal cord. The provider may have to open and expand the dura by suturing in place a dural graft. The goal of this procedure is to reduce or eliminate compression of the spinal cord.
