The provider places an intravascular stent into a cervical carotid artery under imaging guidance. He may place the stent through a percutaneous catheter or via an open incision. He may also perform an angioplasty, that is, removal of plaque from the lining of the artery. He performs this procedure to treat carotid artery stenosis, or narrowing of the artery.
