The provider places an intravascular stent into a cervical carotid artery under imaging guidance. He may place the stent through a percutaneous catheter or via an open incision. He also places an embolic protection device in the artery before placement of the stent. He may perform an angioplasty, i.e., removal of plaque from the lining of the artery. He uses imaging guidance or angiography to confirm placement of the devices. He performs this procedure to treat carotid artery stenosis, or narrowing of the artery.
