In this procedure, the provider surgically repairs a cardiac defect present since birth, in which the aorta arises from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle. The pulmonary artery is normally located in the right ventricle and the aorta is located in the left ventricle. The provider switches the transposed, or abnormally attached, pulmonary artery and aorta. This procedure is also known as an arterial switch or Jatene procedure.
