In this procedure, the provider surgically repairs a cardiac defect present since birth, in which the aorta arises from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle, by constructing a baffle or tunnel from the pericardium or the atrial valve that directs the deoxygenated blood to the left ventricle and the pulmonary artery and directs the oxygenated blood to right ventricle and aorta. The provider places the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass. The provider also repairs a subpulmonic obstruction, or an obstruction in the pulmonary artery caused by a band of fibrous tissue at the junction of the right ventricle with the pulmonary artery. This procedure is also known as a Mustard or Senning type procedure.
