In this procedure, the provider repairs a narrowed and stiff mitral valve using a percutaneous (through the skin) approach. The mitral valve controls the passage of blood from the left atrium of the heart, which is the collecting chamber, to the left ventricle, which is the pumping chamber. He may also puncture the heart through the septum. The provider releases the stiff valve while the patient is on an artificial heart lung machine and he can place a prosthesis.
