In this procedure, the provider performs an open treatment of a slipped femoral epiphysis by removing a wedge shaped portion of bone from the neck of the femur to reduce a fracture in the growth plate. He also uses internal fixation implants to stabilize the correction in the bone. A slipped femoral epiphysis is a condition encountered in growing children characterized by slippage of the overlying end of the femur, or epiphysis, due to a fracture of the growth plate, or physis.
