Summary

The provider carefully examines the inside of a penetrating wound of the abdomen, flank, or back to assess the extent of damage to underlying tissues and structures as well as to identify and remove any foreign bodies that may have entered the wound, such as bullet fragments or a knife tip. In the case of a gunshot wound, a bullet may enter the body at one point and exit at another, causing perforation and damage to internal organs and tissues along its path.
