Question: During a cystoscopy at the end of a brachytherapy case, I noted a urothelial tumor in the prostatic urethra. I performed transurethral resection (< 2 cm) of this lesion. Would I code a TURBT code or a different code?
Answer: As tumor resection codes are placed in the CPT® manual under the major heading of bladder and urethra, you should use the bladder resection codes for urethral tumors. The prostatic urethra is part of the urethra. A tumor 2 cm. in size would call for transurethral resection of a small bladder tumor (TURB) code 52234 (Cystourethroscopy, with fulguration (including cryosurgery or laser surgery) and/or resection of; SMALL bladder tumor[s] [0.5 up to 2.0 cm]).
