Reader Question:

Turn to 53852 for Rezum Treatment

Question: We are trying to find support for reporting 53852 for the Rezum treatment. Anthem says we have to use an unlisted code. Everything I can find online states to use the same code as TUNA (53852). What do you recommend?

North Carolina Subscriber

Answer: You are correct – the appropriate CPT® code for the Rezum procedure is 53852 (Transurethral destruction of prostate tissue; by radiofrequency thermotherapy).

Explanation: The Rezum system uses radiofrequency energy to transform sterile water into stored thermal energy in the form of vapor or steam. This water vapor is convectively delivered directly into the obstructive prostate tissue (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), where condensation releases enough thermal energy to denature the targeted prostate tissue cells to cause necrosis. The treated necrotic tissue is absorbed by the body’s natural immune system. It is intended to relieve symptoms of obstruction and reduce prostate tissue associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is indicated for treatment of prostates with both hyperplasia of the central zone as well as the median lobe.
