Question: I saw that the AMA has released errata for the 2023 code set and one deleted urology code is actually still active, but I can’t find the information. Can you tell me which code was added back? North Dakota Subscriber Answer: You are correct. The AMA has found some errors in the 2023 CPT® code book and published an errata document on Nov. 1. One correction is directly related to urology: The AMA retracted the deletion of 0499T (Cystourethroscopy, with mechanical dilation and urethral therapeutic drug delivery for urethral stricture or stenosis, including fluoroscopy, when performed). They also re-added notes about 0499T under codes 52281 (Cystourethroscopy, with calibration and/or dilation of urethral stricture or stenosis, with or without meatotomy, with or without injection procedure for cystography, male or female) and 0619T (Cystourethroscopy with transurethral anterior prostate commissurotomy and drug delivery, including transrectal ultrasound and fluoroscopy, when performed). “The Category II code was erroneously deleted in the 2023 CPT® code book as it was to sunset in 2023,” says Stephanie Stinchcomb Storck, CPC, CPMA, CCS-P, ACS-UR, longtime urology coder and consultant in Glen “At the September 2022 CPT® meeting, there was a request for a transition from the Category III code 0619T to a Category I code for the BPH indication that was approved and will be effective 1/1/2024,” says Storck. “At that meeting, the 0499T code was included in the agenda instead of the 0619T, so there was some confusion.” Stay tuned to Urology Coding Alert for 2024 CPT® information as it is released. Burnie, Maryland. “Apparently, the Category III code was extended for five years so it will expire in 2028 instead.” Additionally: Another interesting note related to this code is that there are Category III codes for the Optilume technology for two different indications: urethral stricture or stenosis (0499T) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, 0619T).
