Reader Question:

Age Does Not Guide Catheterization Coding In Congenital Heart Disease

Question: How can we report left heart catheterization in an adult patient with the diagnosis of congenital heart disease?

New York Subscriber

Answer: You do not have a left heart catheterization code only in congenital heart disease. This is because left heart catheterization in such patients is rarely performed. Hence, for left heart catheterization in a patient with congenital heart disease, you submit code 93452 (Left heart catheterization including intraprocedural injection[s] for left ventriculography, imaging supervision and interpretation, when performed).

Catheterization in congenital heart disease: You can report codes 93530 (Right heart catheterization, for congenital cardiac anomalies) - 93533 (Combined right heart catheterization and trans-septal left heart catheterization through existing septal opening, with or without retrograde left heart catheterization, for congenital cardiac anomalies) in patients with congenital cardiac anomalies.

Age is not a factor: These codes for catheterization in congenital cardiac conditions are not based on the age of the patient.
