Question: Our physician placed a Swan-Ganz catheter in the right heart for studying hemodynamics and measuring the cardiac output. Can we report for both right heart catheterization and cardiac output measurements?

Answer: Right heart hemodynamics implies right heart catheterization. This also includes placement of the Swan-Ganz catheter for diagnostic purposes. You cannot separately report for cardiac output measurement with right heart catheterization. The code 93561 (Indicator dilution studies such as dye or thermodilution, including arterial and/or venous catheterization; with cardiac output measurement [separate procedure]) for cardiac output is bundled with 93451 (Right heart catheterization including measurement[s] of oxygen saturation and cardiac output, when performed), for right heart catheterization.
