Reader Questions:

Know When to Use Fasciotomy Code

Question: My podiatrist made a plantar incision, exposing the deep fascia overlying the abductor hallucis and the medial plantar fascial band. She detached the plantar fascia from the heel bone and made incisions on either side of the heel to release tension. She sanded the bony surface to reduce irritation to the fascia. Finally, my podiatrist irrigated the area, checked for bleeding, removed any instruments, and closed the incision. Which CPT® code should I report for this procedure?

North Carolina Subscriber

Answer: You should report 28008 (Fasciotomy, foot and/or toe) on your claim.

Don’t miss: Your podiatrist may perform a fasciotomy, which is an incision of fascial tissue, to relieve tension or pressure from plantar fasciitis or to release a contracture of the toe.
