Reader Question:

Notice Differences Between Bone Grafting Codes

Question: Can you explain the differences between codes 20900 and 20902?

Illinois Subscriber

Answer: Codes 20900 (Bone graft, any donor area; minor or small (eg, dowel or button)) and 20902 (Bone graft, any donor area; major or large) are both bone graft codes.

If you look at the code descriptors, you will see that the difference between the two is the size of the donor area, which is the location from where tissue is harvested for use in a grafting procedure.

You should report 20900 if the donor area is minor or small, which includes dowel or button size.

You should report 20902 if the donor area size is major or large.
