Question: Can we bill CPT 97014 (electrical stimulation, unattended) and 97033 (iontophoresis, each 15 minutes) on the same date for the same patient?

Answer: The CPT code 97014 is utilized to report unattended electrical stimulation. The term unattended means that the patient is positioned, and the appropriate type of stimulation is applied, but the practitioner does not have to have one-on-one contact with the patient during the stimulation.
CPT code 97033 is used to report each fifteen minutes of iontophoresis, which requires constant attendance. This means that the provider must maintain one-on-one patient contact throughout the procedure. There are no CCI edits preventing you from billing these services together, as long as both are deemed medically necessary and are part of the plan of care established by the PM&R practitioner.
