Question: What is the difference between H80.8- and H80.9-? Virginia Subscriber Answer: Code families that use “unspecified” and “other” can be confusing when you’re trying to pick the most accurate code. For otosclerosis, when the type isn’t specified by the physician, and the information in the medical record is insufficient to assign a more specific code, use H80.9- (Unspecified otosclerosis). You’ll use H80.8- (Other otosclerosis) when the specific type of otosclerosis is identified in the documentation but no other code for it exists.
