Report 10180 for Complex Post-op Wound Infection I&D

In the August Orthopedic Coding Alert article "2 Questions Help You Report Postoperative Infections," we advised coders to report 11000 (Debridement of extensive eczematous or infected skin; up to 10% of body surface) when the physician debrides a deep wound following a severe postoperative infection. Instead of 11000, however, you should report 10180 (Incision and drainage, complex, postoperative wound infection) or 11042-11044 (Debridement...) for this service. Thanks to Barbara McBride, MBA, CPC, president/CEO of Business Dynamics LLC in New York for pointing out the error.
