Optometry Coding & Billing Alert

Correction:

Don't Bill for Gonioscopy If You Don't Perform It

An article in the August 2004 Optometry Billing and Coding Alert, "Perfect Your Coding Technique With These Expert Scenarios," presented a scenario in which an optometrist performs a confirmatory consultation, a corneal pachymetry, an extended threshold fields exam, fundus photographs, a provocative glaucoma test, and a retinal laser scan. Among the CPT codes that we recommended reporting in this scenario was 92020 (Gonioscopy [separate procedure]).

The optometrist in this scenario did not perform gonioscopy, however, so it would be inappropriate to bill for it. We regret the error.
