Oncology & Hematology Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Multiple Ovarian Cancer Types Fall Under 183.0

Question: Is there a specific code for primary clear cell ovarian cancer? Delaware Subscriber Answer: As with other primary ovarian cancers, such as micropapillary, serous, mucinous, endometroid, and squamous, you should assign 183.0 (Malignant neoplasm of ovary and other uterine adnexa; ovary). Watch for: ICD-9 code 183.0 includes a note to "Use additional code to identify any functional activity." This means that if the patient is experiencing abnormal bleeding or other problems, you should assign additional  diagnosis codes to report these conditions.
