Question: What Place of Service do we use when a physician from our office examines a patient in another doctor’s private office?

Answer: Effective for dates of service on or after April 1, 2013, the place of service (POS) reported on claims for all services that are payable under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) must be the same setting as the face-to-face encounter for physicians and suppliers.

You report POS 11 for the service offered by your physician in the private office of another doctor. The POC 11 is reported for: Location, other than a hospital, skilled nursing facility (SNF), military treatment facility, community health center, State or local public health clinic, or intermediate care facility (ICF), where the health professional routinely provides health examinations, diagnosis, and treatment of illness or injury on an ambulatory basis.
