Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Work With V Codes for Spontaneous Abortion Aftercare

Question: The ob-gyn saw a patient five weeks after a spontaneous complete abortion. Which diagnosis code should I use for this visit?

Florida Subscriber Answer: You have three alternatives for diagnosis codes in this situation, but each includes V codes. Your first choice is V24.2 (Routine postpartum follow-up). This may, however, cause the payer to look for a surgical code for the delivery, which it will not find. So, alternatively, you may use V67.59 (Follow-up examination following other treatment, other) or V58.9 (Unspecified aftercare)
