Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Report Amnioinfusion With Delivery

Question: Is there any way to report a scalp electrode or amnioinfusion with delivery?

Illinois Subscriber Answer: You should code amnioinfusion, if done transabdominally (performed like an amniocentesis) as 59070 (Transabdominal amnioinfusion, including ultrasound guidance). If the physician simply passes a catheter into the cervix, you should use unlisted-procedure code 59899 (Unlisted procedure, maternity care and delivery).

The term "scalp electrode" is vague. If the ob-gyn drew fetal scalp blood, you should report 59030 (Fetal scalp blood sampling). However, if you mean that the ob-gyn used fetal scalp electrodes to monitor the fetal heart rate, this service is included as part of the labor management.
