Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Multigravida

Question: When do we use the V codes for elderly and young primi- and multigravida? When we do serial sonography and biophysical profile for elderly/young patients, we use the 659.xx codes rather than the V codes. Is this correct?

Massachusetts Subscriber

Answer: The V codes for young or elderly primigravida/multigravida are reported only when you are reporting surveillance, meaning the patient has potential for a problem due to her age, but has not yet developed one. If you do frequent sonography because there is a problem with the pregnancy, you should use the obstetric chapter codes (630-677). If you are screening for a suspected problem not yet in evidence, you should use the V codes.
