Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Fetal Lung Maturity

Question: If a patient is reporting for an amniocentesis to check fetal lung maturity and we already know she has oligohydramnios from an earlier ultrasound, should I code the amnio with oligohydramnios or would V28.2 be more appropriate? Texas Subscriber Answer: Code V28.2 (Other antenatal screening based on amniocentesis) should be linked to the amnio if its purpose is to evaluate fetal lung maturity. The oligohydramnios (658.0x, Other problems associated with amniotic cavity and membranes; oligohydramnios) should be linked to the appropriate ultrasound code. If the physician was asked to do a consultation on this patient, you also should link the oligohydramnios diagnosis to the appropriate consult code (99241-99275).
