Reader Question:

When Is A SNF Not A SNF? When It's A Rehab Facility

Q: The patient was discharged from the rehabilitation unit of a skilled nursing facility. This rehab section is a distinct unit of the SNF. How should we mark M0175?

A: M0175 asks the clinician to identify from which kind of inpatient facility the patient has been discharged during the past 14 days and to mark all the answers that apply. Chapter 8 of the OASIS Manual contains detailed information on each OASIS question and gives some clear guidelines that may help answer this question, advises clinical consultant Linda Rutman with the LarsonAllen Healthcare Group.

It could be that "2" (rehabilitation facility) would be the only answer, but the clinician may need to contact the facility to find out if the patient was in both the rehab and the non-rehab parts of the SNF before answering the question. If the patient was in both, you would check both "2" and "3" (skilled nursing facility), she explains.
