Mistaken Death Pronouncement For Hospice Patient Grabs Headlines

Hospice care is once again in the news for a story that could turn people off of the benefit.

In Iowa, a 66-year-old resident under hospice care at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbandale was pronounced dead by a facility nurse. When the patient was transported to the funeral home and they unzipped her body bag, she “gasped for air,” according to an Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Health Facilities Division Citation report. After the funeral home called the hospice and 911 and the patient went to the emergency department, she returned to the facility and died two days later, according to the report.

The state is fining the facility $10,000 for two citations. But mainstream press reports, including in the New York Times, seem to conflate the facility’s and hospice’s responsibilities in the matter.
