Codes address maintenance therapy. Get familiar with two new therapy assistant G codes for maintenance therapy that will be implemented this October. The 2020 HH PPS final rule included a change allowing therapist assistants to perform maintenance therapy under the Medicare home health benefit, the Centers for Medicare & Medi-caid Services notes in a memo issued May 1. “For analysis purposes, in order to track how much maintenance therapy is being furnished by therapist assistants in response to this regulatory change … CMS will establish a G-code for the maintenance services furnished by a physical therapist assistant and a G-code for the maintenance services furnished by an occupational therapist assistant,” says Change Request 11721. The 15-minute unit codes, G2168 (PTA) and G2169 (OTA), are retroactive to Jan. 1, but will not be implemented until Oct. 5, the CR says. Until then, “HHAs should continue to report G0157 and G0158 for any therapist assistant services provided in 2020,” CMS directs at www.cms.gov/files/document/r10086CP.pdf.
