LUPA Hold Throws Agencies For A Loop
Hold may affect more than LUPA claims.
A new claims system glitch is slowing home health agencies’ cash flow.
Problem: "Medicare contractors have identified an incorrect payment calculation affecting home health claims that would be paid low utilization payment adjustments (LUPAs)," the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services explains. "To prevent these claims from paying incorrectly, Medicare contractors will hold all home health LUPA claims with ‘Through’ dates on or after Janu-ary 1, 2014 until Medicare systems are corrected," CMS says on its website.
Solution: "This correction should occur in early February, 2014," CMS expects. "Home health agencies do not need to take any action. Medicare contractors will release the claims as soon as the correction is complete."
Snag: HHAs report that some non-LUPA claims are getting held up in this process.
