Reader Question:

Chiropractors and the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program

Question: Are chiropractors eligible to participate in the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program? Please explain how to go about this.

Answer: The Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program has been instituted for incentive payments to Medicare eligible professionals (EPs) who demonstrate the capacity meaning fully use the EHR technology. This includes the chiropractors too.

These professionals meet the criteria for incentive payments for the “meaningful use” of certified EHR technology, if they meet all the program requirements. This program, however, does not apply to hospital-based EPs, who are defined as the EP who provides 90 percent or more of his services in a hospital or emergency department.

EPs may not receive the EHR incentive payments from both the Medicaid and Medicare EHR Incentive Programs simultaneously within the same year. In case the EP qualifies for the incentive from both the Medicare and Medicaid, he will have to forego the benefits from either one of these.
