Question: What’s included in G9157?
Answer: Medicare includes a number of services under G9157 (Transesophageal doppler use for cardiac monitoring). According to MLN Matters MM8330, the code is intended to reflect the physician’s work involved in:
· Insertion, placement, and repositioning of the transesophageal Doppler (TED) probe
· Assessment(s) with report, image acquisition(s), and interpretation(s).
The code is payable by Medicare once per course of treatment for dates of service on or after Jan. 1, 2013. For dates before that, 76999 (Unlisted ultrasound procedure [e.g., diagnostic, interventional]) was appropriate. The change was included in the April update to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS), which retroactively changed the status of G9157 to A (Active).
Keep in mind: Code G9157 is only covered in the inpatient setting with place of service 21.
