Become a Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA®)
In this course you will obtain skills required for conducting medical auditing and abstraction of coding and billing for medical claims in connection with fraud, abuse, risk analysis and governmental and payer guidelines.
Course Summary
AAPC training is superior and is designed to ensure students who complete the course have the necessary job competencies needed for medical auditing and to pass the certification exam. Our course follows a learning process that first teaches concept learning followed by practical application training. Each student will participate in lectures, reading assignments, quizzes, chapter tests and practical application assignments to ensure a well-rounded learning experience.
The course is approximately 20 hours and will cover the following competency areas:
- Review of Compliance and Regulatory Guidelines
- Fraud and Abuse
- False Claims Act
- Anti-kick back and Stark Law
- OIG and CMS regulatory requirements
- Medical Record Documentation Standards
- HIPAA Privacy Regulations
- Coding and Reimbursement Concepts
- Auditing Processes
- Statistical Sampling Methods
- Risk Analysis and Communication
- Validating Audit Results
- Practical Application Exercises
Once students have completed the competency training, they will have the necessary skills and knowledge to challenge the certification exams. Successfully passing this exam, students will be awarded the CPMA® credential.

Online - Self Paced
The online self-paced course is designed for students who want complete flexibility to follow their own schedule and study independently. AAPC coaches will be available to answer questions via email or chat. Students will need access to a computer with reliable high-speed internet.
Students will have access to the course for 4 months.

Requirements
We strongly recommend that the candidate have at least two years of experience in medical coding or a coding related professional credential (CPC, CIC, RHIT, CCS)
Required Course Materials
Students will need the following medical coding books for the CPMA® Preparation Course:
- AMA's CPT® Professional (current course year)
- ICD-10-CM (current course year)
- HCPCS Level II (current course year)
Any other materials such as workbooks or study guides will be included with the course.
Computer Access
Students will need access to a computer and reliable high-speed internet.
Students taking a virtual class, should also have a built-in or external web-cam.
Training Only
Books, exam and membership are not included and will need to be purchased separately.
