We are getting denials on Sinusitis codes. I assume this is happening because providers are not using the additional infectious agent code. In these instances, we do not know what the infectious agent is. I see "Viruses are the most common cause of acute sinusitis, but bacteria are responsible for most of the serious and chronic cases." when doing a quick search on causes of Sinusitis.
The ICD-10 book includes B97.89 (other viral agents as cause of disease classified elsewhere) and B96.89 (other specified bacterial agents as the cause of diseases classified elsewhere), but nothing that seems to be a more generalized code within the B95-B97 code set. I see B99.9 (unspecified infectious disease), but it's not within the noted code set.
What code should we be using?
Any reference materials would be greatly appreciated. TSM
