patient came in and saw our orthopedic hand specialist and later on that day she saw our physical medicine doc who performs emg etc, for a totally different unrelated problem can I will both em codes?
Was the EMG scheduled? Or was it only done after an E/M? IF the decision to perform the EMG was made during the office visit, and not planned or scheduled in any way, then the answer could be yes.
Your problem is now with credentialing.
If the providers have separate taxonomy numbers, insurance will see that they are of different specialties and pay both. If not, then you can bill both E/M but one will deny.
We have two hand specialist. One was credentialed correctly as a specialist and the other one not. So one I can bill "new patient" visits for or other office visits on the same day, but the other one I can't.
thanks fo much for the advice, i am new with orthopedic and have alot of doctors with different specialities so i am learning any advice is very helpful.
