I'm coding an encounter for Physical Therapy and the therapist never indicates the time that the patient was getting physical therapy, so can he just indicate it by 1 unit, I was told by one coder that a unit=15 minutes but I also know that the guidelines say they have to say the patient had at least 8 minutes of therapy in order to code eg.., 97110. Thank you.

I am under the impression that that 8-22 min is one unit. He definitely has to report the mins so you can prove the units you are billing for. you can search physical therapy units time and look at images and get charts that layout the minutes per unit (full disclosure I am a new coder)
