We code from lab requisitions for prenatal chromosomal testing. If a requisition indicates that the patient is pregnant and also indicates primi-/multigravida status, but the provider has not checked z DX box, can we code a normal supervision code from the information shown? The coders feel that the provider needs to be queried in order to submit that code on a claim. Coding review is done for billing purposes.
Secondly, we have been directed to code an AMA code from a lab requisition IF we know primi-/multi status even when the code submitted on the requisition is a screening code. Does this comply with coding convention? Again, the purpose of coding these is for reimbursement, not for genetic counseling.
Thank you for your feedback.
