The provider administers a photosensitizing drug to abnormal tissue and, for each additional 15 minutes, over a period of 38 to 52 minutes, exposes it to a specific wavelength of light, depending on how far into tissue the light needs to penetrate. The provider performs this photodynamic therapy at the same session that he performs a primary endoscopy or bronchoscopy. The procedure is performed to destroy cancerous or precancerous cells.
