The provider performs an ultrasound of the arteries inside the head using Doppler technique to study the flow and speed of blood through the arteries. He injects a microbubble of saline or air to enhance the imaging. The provider performs this study to search for emboli, i.e., intravascular masses capable of clogging arterial capillary beds.
