A comprehensive electrophysiologic (EP) study involves the provider placing wire electrodes in the heart to measure electrical activity. The provider punctures the thin wall between the heart chambers to access necessary sites. The provider induces, or attempts to induce, arrhythmia. The provider also uses energy to treat the source of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) around the connection of the pulmonary veins to the left atrium. This ablation treatment is known as pulmonary vein isolation (PVI).
