In this procedure the provider makes an incision in the patient’s arm or leg to access the artery. He then inserts a catheter with a rotating blade and inflates a balloon tipped catheter in the blocked area of the coronary artery or coronary artery bypass graft. The provider may insert a stent to expand the narrowed walls of the vessel to treat an occlusion during a heart attack. He may also remove plaque from the lining of an artery, repair an artery, or aspirate a thrombus, or blood clot. The provider performs this procedure to restore a recently blocked coronary artery bypass graft or coronary artery during an acute myocardial infarction.
