The lab analyst performs a test to measure the insulin antibodies, typically in patient blood, which the analyst collects with vein puncture. Providers order this test for patients suspected of having type 1 diabetes, patients who appear to have an allergic response to insulin, or patients for whom insulin is not effective in controlling their blood sugar. Because type 1 diabetes is autoimmune, the test will help distinguish type 1 from type 2.
