The lab analyst measures the galactokinase in red blood cells. Galactokinase is an enzyme that allows the body to metabolize or process a simple sugar called galactose. The absence of galactokinase in the body results in the abnormal buildup of galactitol, which goes on to initiate cataract formation and other metabolic problems.
