The lab analyst performs the technical lab tests on a vaginal fluid specimen for real–time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of DNA markers for bacterial species listed in the code descriptor and carries out an algorithmic analysis using patient data and the lab test results to report positive or negative for a high likelihood of bacterial vaginosis (BV). The test may additionally report detection of other organisms such as Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida species.
