The provider implants thin semicircular or crescent–shaped soft plastic rings into channels created in the supportive tissue (stroma) at the outer edges of the cornea to flatten the anterior curvature and correct its shape. The provider performs this procedure to treat keratoconus, a degenerative disease that causes the transparent covering on the front of the eye (the cornea) to become conical in shape and distorts vision, or to correct mild to moderate nearsightedness (myopia).
