The provider administers a chemical compound to the neck muscles on one side, avoiding the laryngeal muscles. The goal of this procedure is to paralyze the muscles. Providers may treat cervical dystonia (a sustained contraction of the neck muscles) or spasmodic torticollis (a painful, sustained contraction of neck muscles that causes the neck and head to involuntarily twist to one side and/or up or down).
