In a patient with a buildup of fluid under the arachnoid or dural membrane covering the brain, the provider inserts a shunt to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, either to the abdominal cavity, pleural cavity or other terminus, meaning another location to drain. The provider performs this service to treat hydrocephalus, an obstruction in the flow of CSF, which creates pressure on the brain, also referred to as water on the brain.
