In this procedure, the provider excises the prostate gland through an incision in the perineum, along with the vas deferens, or duct that carries sperm. He also incises and enlarges the urethra, or external urinary duct, and takes measures to prevent blood loss after the procedure. He performs the procedure to treat a tumor or persistent enlargement of the prostate that is obstructing urinary flow.
