In this procedure, the provider cuts a portion of the intestine known as the ileum, closes it from one end to form a pouch, sutures the ureter to divert urine into the ileal pouch, and connects the other end of the ileal pouch to the abdominal wall to create an external opening for outflow of urine. He then sutures the cut ends of the intestine together to reestablish bowel continuity. He primarily performs this procedure to facilitate urine excretion following surgical removal of the urinary bladder due to severe trauma or malignancy.
