The provider examines the entire upper digestive tract except for the ileum, the most distal portion of the small intestine. He places a jejunostomy tube through the endoscope into the jejunum and brings it out through a stab incision in the abdomen. The provider performs these procedures to provide the patient with nutritional support, typically to allow healing of the esophagus or stomach from disease or prior surgery.
